Hi Jennie,
Are the holes clean through the leaves, sometimes called "shot holed" as it looks like little bullet holes through the leaf,
Are the holes "bitten" out of the leaf edges or margins, which is often the case with biting/chewing insects like Vine Weevil or types of caterpillars?
How long have you had the Acer, what sort is it, how big is it and where did you buy most nurseries now offer "guarantees" for their plants.

I've never heard of urine damage causing such a problem, but you never know...!
