Hawthorn needles.. Poisonous? Severe pain.

I was clearing some Hawthorn (or blackthorn) today and the needles peirced my gloves and my skin. Usually this would cause a 'numbness' around the puncture but after a few more spikes my finger became very painful to the point where I couldn't move the finger out of its natural resting position without severe pain.
It felt very much like a broken knuckle. this happened 12hrs ago and its still painful when trying to spread my hand or make a fist to carry objects.
Has anyone else had a reaction this bad to hawthorn? if so how long did it last?
Thanks..
P.s There was never any thorns or bits of thorn left in the puncture.
