They're produced in the autumn. They are 'keys' - the easiest way to know they're from a Japanese maple is to find them on a Japanese maple. Be aware, though, that most Japanese maple cultivars do not come true from seed. That's not to say you won't get a nice tree, but it probably won't look like its parents.
