Should I take off branches from my established beech tree?

Should I take off branches from my established beech tree?

Hi,
We have a really good, established, approx 60-70 foot beech tree in our back garden. Unfortunately it shades most of the garden during the summer months and we are considering getting some of the branches on one side taken off to open the garden up a little. Is this a sensible thing to do? Would it harm the tree in any way? Does it require a professional?
All thoughts welcome!
Many thanks,
Guy
