Japanese Maple - Cankers?
Japanese Maple - Cankers?

Hi Everyone, I recently moved into a home in the Twin Cities area, MN. I had a beautiful Japanese Maple in the front year when I moved in last fall. This tree was the first in the neighborhood to loose its leaves by a few months. This spring there are NO leaves. I believe the tree is dead from cankers. There are large gross looking growths on the trunk and large branch. I would LOVE some advice on where to go from here. Questions I have:
-Is the tree dead?
-When should I cut it down?
-When should I replace the tree?
-Should I be worried about my next tree developing the same problem?
-If so, should I plant a different species?
Thanks so much in advance.
I have pictures I would happily email to anyone who is willing to spend a their time helping.
