Our Maple tree is missing a section of bark on its trunk about 6" x 24".

The tree is between 30-60 years old. We have recently had a great deal of rain, The leaves on the tree seem OK, but also there are a number of leaves on the ground. Is this a sign of too much water, insect damage or something else? Can this tree be saved?

Thanks,
Nels
