Phytophthora without canker?

Hi there.
I just visited a site with mature Beech and Sycamore. in a woodland enviroment.
20 meters plus in height.
a patch group of 10 (both species) without aparent symptom. The ground is wet, but no bark disease or fungi to be seen.
I wonder if water borne disease could be like or phytophthora, but does it always have to show the canker?
