Crab apple and Rowen problem

Hi all,

I was wondering if anybody knows what the problem is with two of our trees.

We have a crab apple (we think) that was fine in spring, but at some point over summer went very ill. All the leaves went black and brown, particularly around the edges. Today we noticed that the same thing is now happening with our Rowen, which is right next to the crab apple. Until now the Rowen was fine.

We showed the photos at a gardening centre and they suggested that perhaps the plant underneath was taking all the nutrients/smothering the trees?

Can anybody recognize what's happening here? We're gardening novices and only moved into this house a few months ago so we don't know the history of these trees.

Many thanks,
