How to treat a snapped tree

Hi all,
Unfortunately the recent weather has destroyed my lovely tree. I have no idea what type of tree it is.
We recently had some extremely heavy snow which collected on the tree, this caused it to snap right down the middle about 1 foot in from the top.
I have a saw and quite I'm cable of cutting the tree but don't want to cause any more damage.
whats the best course of action for my tree? I have to do something as the sides are now head height.
Should I just saw below the damage and treat the top?

Thanks
