Driveway excavation near trees

I plan to build a gravel driveway through woods. I intend to remove
the minimum number of trees necessary to make space for the
roadway. I understand there could be some risk to the trees that
remain next to the roadway from damage to roots cut by excavation
and suffocated by soil compaction. It turns out that the local
building authority requires a gravel-filled trench 24 inches
deep along one side of the driveway for stormwater runoff
management. This trench will fill with water after major storms.
How much does the presence of this trench raise the risk of
damage to the trees compared to a gravel driveway alone?
