Hi Paul

One of the key defining features of maples is that the buds are directly opposite each other. There are only a few types of tree that this is true for (ash is another one). Usually buds alternate up each side. If the tree has maple like leaves and they are arranged in pairs opposite each other it is a fair bet it is some sort of maple.

If you are going to move, winter is the time to do it.
