Root Collar Excavation

I have a maple that is approximately 20 yrs old. About 4 yrs ago the landscape around it was changed and a retaining wall placed around it. The dirt filled around the wall caused the trunk to now be too deep, about six inches. Last year the tree had early color/drop and this year has really struggled to leaf out. A root collar excavation was suggested and has been performed. My question is how long might it take to new growth on the tree? Should it be left until fall, next spring??
