Red Oak Scaffold Branch Removal

I have a Red Oak tree that had a large scaffold coming off the main trunk at ground level. The crotch was narrow. The scaffold was leaning toward my house and its upper branches were above the house roofline. I cut the upper part of the scaffold down and it is now 3 feet tall. My question is should I seal the cut surface of the scaffold to prevent rot that might eventually cause damage to the main tree?
Thank You
