I came across this tree in the back of the parking lot of a Garden centre. I am in the East Midlands of the UK. This is the only example of this type of tree I have ever seen, could someone please suggest what kind of tree it is. I have included some photos of the tree itself and of the fruit and leaves. I was struck by the fact that the tree was nearly as wide as it was high and that branches started really low down on the trunk so they touched the floor at the ends. The fruit are about the size of a table tennis ball. Buddy my Yorkshire terrier/Jack Russell cross dog might help give the picture some scale. I am sure this is not a native British tree and may have been planted by the garden centre. The tree in the background of the second picture is some sort of maple and definitely planted there.
