Lemon production

Hi,

I live in California north of San Francisco in a climate that is warm in the day and cool at night. I have a small lemon tree in the ground. It's beautiful with nice dark green leaves. However, the lemon production is minimal. I get about 5 lemons a year. Why won't this tree produce more fruit? It grows fast with lighter green leaves and stems growing above the darker green. And they have very large thorns. I always prune these off to give my tree a nice round shape and keep the tree at about 6 feet. Can anyone help me get more lemons?

Thanks,
Pete
