Hi Jon,

I don't know if you've gotten any help with your purple locust aka purple robe locust aka Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Purple Robe’. The bark should not be peeling and the crack you mention in the trunk is not good. Without pictures it would be difficult to say what is happening. These trees are prone to borers. Here's some info on these trees and a conversation you should find interesting. I'm guessing you are in the US.

If you still need help you can post pics at one of these sites where arborists hang ou. Be sure to also include photos of the base of the tree so they can see if it's planted too deep.

At this site you can't post pics so you will need to post them at a free site like photobucket.com and copy and paste the link. Be sure to let them know where you live and when the trees were planted.

You can post pics here in the homeowners forum.
