Hi Ray,
Many people deadhead Magnolia grandiflora when it's young. I like the seed heads as they add interest to the tree. Some people use the seed heads in dried flower arrangments or for Christmas decoration.
You will eventually need to plant your tree in the ground. This will become a very large tree. Site it where you won't need to remove the lower limbs as the large leathery leaves can be problematic near a sidewalk or driveway. You might find the info here helpful.
