White spots on tree trunks

White spots on tree trunks

The trees in my garden have small white fluffy sticky blobs (like candy floss) on them with a brownish shell stuck in the middle. The shells are empty when I have taken them off and I would like to know if they were insect nests. There a a few ladybirds on the trunks near the blobs.

Can you suggest the origin of the blobs??
