Can you say from what colour they are changing and to what colour? You do see a reversion problem in some variegated forms of Acer sometimes. On the other hand, trees, both variegated and red leaved, will tend to go green if there isn't sufficient light. You can often see this within the canopy of red leaved trees - in the centre leaves are noticeably more green where they are shaded by the other foliage.
