With most trees it makes only a minor difference which time of year you prune them. However, trees of the Prunus genus are the major exception.

These trees are vulnerable to a fungus known as silver leaf. The spores enter the tree through new wounds. Because of this it is advisable to prune Prunus during the growing season, when the wounds will be quickly sealed over by the sticky sap that excudes from them.
