Hi John,

I suspect your tree has either aphids or scale insects. They secrete honeydew aka waste this is sugary and clear. Over time sooty mold will grow on the honeydew. You can use an insecticidal soap every 5 to 7 days until they are gone. Here's what aphids and scales look like. They both come in different colors.
