As a rule trees grow to a height that they can support. There are some exceptions, particularly when a tree is suddenly exposed by a change in its surroundings, but generally trees develop the strength they need to survive in a particular situation. Whats more, silver birch does not respond well to pruning and looks rubbish if you try. Your wife is right.
