Ornamental Pear Tree

Posted by Patricia Bersick , Mar 22,2005,17:36       Forum

When I first bought my home 10 years ago it had been groomed to sell and everything was cut to the ground. I was eager to see greenery so when 8 6inch diameter tree stubs started to grow shoots I let them grow, to see just what they were. Many upward shoots grew. I thinned them down to 3 or 6 shoots depending on their size. They grew very fast at different stages. I began to notice thorns appearing from the truncks and tips of branches. It was extreamly painful to be stuck. I started to remove all the lower thorns and through the years the trunks quit growing them and now I keep the lower branches well overhead. A few are about 30 feet now and all are doing well. Can you tell me what variety I have that gets the thorns. I have read many articles about Ornamental Pears, but non has mentioned what the Pear Tree is that has thorns. Only thornless has been mentioned.

Hope you can help.
