Hi Patricia,
The species of the ornamental pear - Pyrus calleryana has thorns. The trees that were there were possibly grafted onto species stock or they were the wild form of ornamental pear. These trees are considered an invasive species in the US, but you don't say where you are located. Take a look here.

There are also hawthornes that fit your description, some of which are native to the US. One is Crataegus calpodendron, in the US that has small pears and thorns.

Without knowing where you are located it's difficult to say what tree you have. This forum is located in the UK.
