damaged poplar
I live in southwestern PA and I have a very old and large poplar that has provided us with wonderful shade over our patio. This year I have noticed a woodpecker in the tree and he is just going to town! I have fine wood chips all over my deck and upon closer examination, I think that my tree is damaged. The new leaves are scarce and the trunk does not look healthy. Is this due to bugs? Someone told me that the only reason I have the woodpecker problem is because of bugs. What can I do to save the tree? I also have ivy that grows up the trunk. Is that attracting bugs? Help. I don't want to lose the only shade tree in my yard.
