Thank you for your response. I have had a direct to my mail box message suggesting that these are the bud cases from the leaves. That seems reasonable, but what I don't know is why the tree starts to shed its leaves in early spring. The moment the tree begins to come into leaf, the path and our small lawn are covered. It is a problem.
