kill leylandii trees

Your advice please.
I want to get rid of Leylandii trees in my garden. Can I drill into the trunks & put some sort of poison in and then leave them until next year when I may be able to get what's left removed? They are about 20ft high & I am a bit worried that if they are dead that they may become unstable and fall before I can get them removed.
