What is it???

I came across a tree/bush approximately 20' high bearing 1" round yellow aromatic fruit on the Broad River in Union County, South Carolina 10/30/05. The bush/tree has 1"+ green thorns and narrow, jagged, compound leaves. The fruit is firm, slightly rough, almost fuzzy on the outside and juicy, citrus like, and full of small seeds. Tastes tart, sour, tangy, and citrus. I do not know if it is native or not. I found several growing well in the bottoms near the river (flood plain).
Any help would be appreciated.
