Trimming exposed roots

Posted by Al Ziemba , Aug 20,2006,21:23       Forum

I am planning on expanding a deck off the existinng deck attached to my house. There is a large Red Maple 12 feet away in the path of my additional planned deck. Originally I planned to frame around it like is usually done. However some off the roots around the tree are above the ground & too high to bow around. Is it possible to skim some of the roots down maybe 3-4 inches with a chain saw and possibly paint the cuts to protect them or will this kill the entire tree.
