pruning laurel hedge

hello, i planted a new laurel hedge with 5ft plants 18-24 inch apart last october and have just pruned only about 6 inch off each to level them off,,please is this OK and when do you think they will start to fill up around the base of the plants to fill the gaps...thanks stuart
