Grifola Frondosa (Hen of the Woods) prognosis

Posted by Alastair Durkin , Feb 19,2007,16:43       Forum

I have an large Oak in my garden which is approximately 1.5 metres DBH.
Ten years ago I noticed it had become infected with Hen of the Woods and had it resistograph tested. The test showed very little decay but now although the tree still shows no sign of distress (crown is full and healthy, minimal dieback considering the age of the tree)I am inceasingly worried and have decided to have it tested again, perhaps with tomograph or similar. My question is: How long can an Oak tree survive with this fungus? I realise the fungus is quite slow to spread but seriously...ten years! It must fall over soon surely but I would like to retain it as long as possible but not to the detrimnet of my property. By the way, I'm a Tree Officer and i can't find any good info regarding this. I thought someone might have a bit more experience with this fungus. I've never actually seen it in a garden situation before. It frys up lovely as well!
