liz,
acers usually prefer dappled shade and sheltered locations. some are tolerant of full sun, others not at all. i guess as yours isnt dead, its somewhere in between.
acers can be pruned but note this - if you need to prune any branch or even a twig, be it live or dead, always leave a short stub of wood. do not ever prune the redundant/dead piece off completely. if its a branch, leave a few inches. if you prune a twig (to shorten it) do so, just behind a node - where leaves/twigs grow, or were growing, in pairs. if you want to prune a twig back to a branch, cut it off just behind the last leaf pair or node.
the wood left behind will die back naturally and will fall off in a year or two depending on thickness.
if you are able to provide some shade (something simple like some netting supported by bamboo canes would do) on the hotest days, it will be happier.
good luck, gareth
