kate, why is it in your kitchen? its a tree! they live outside! the warmth of your house has brought forth the leaves and now if you put it outside and you get a frost it may be fatal.
your best hope is to put it outside, somewhere sheltered and should a frost be forecast, place it in a shed or garage overnight (no longer).
trees are best planted out in late autumn. dig a hole about twice or three times the pot size and plant the tree no deeper than it is in the pot at present using a mixture of good compost and horticutural grit (about 30%). as it is small it probably wont need a stake. you can plant it out in the spring but if you do pay careful attention to watering for the first few seasons.
good luck. gareth
