Without a photo, that may be hard to answer.
Your concept of ornamental and ours may vary.
I can add that my style is to get the limbs off the ground, and how much depends on what the client wants.
Those are thinned from the inside and underneath, rather than cropping the top.
Build growth on top, remove from below.
