Paul et al:

I own an F500se Resistograph and use it frequently . The new electronic
version is better and more sensitive than the earlier versions, though these
still give very good results. After over a year of use I am reasonably
confident about interpreting the readings and generally, most of the
dissections I have undertaken following removals, have confirmed the
diagnosis. Now that I have a higher capacity battery and connector, I can
get around 60 to 70 readings with ease and the computer download capability
makes it simple to bring home the data and review it on the screen or in
hard copy. It is excellent for detection of advanced decay and offers an
accurately calibrated chart so that the extenty of sound wood versus decayed
wood can be measured. Incipient decay is less simple to read with most
machines, but as the decay advances, the drilling resistance patterns with
the Resistograph do become obvious. Experience in interpretation is
essential (as with most of the sophisticated units available). I am also
able to detect cracks, and ring shakes, and recently spent several hours
confiming an extensive crack system in a large Douglas-fir, which manifested
some sap flow at odd points on the trunk. All in all, I am very pleased with
the unit, especially the electronic upgrade. It is simpler to use than a
Shigometer and I believe gives more credible information. That being said,
visual assessment is still a basic necessity, and a fancy machine can never
replace good basic talents when evaluating the tree. I expect that there
will be new enhancements in the general area of decay detection, possibly
with opportunities for whole tree trunk evaluation, within the next 5 years.
I believe the power pole industry is already looking at whole pole
evaluations using radio frequency testing. Right now though, I think the
Resistograph is the unit to beat.

And yes, I acknowledge that I am an IML dealer, but only after extensive
testing, and so far all purchasers have been as happy as I with the
machine... and it is much much easier on the arms than taking an increment
core. 60 readings a day with the Resistograph is feasible, but I know that
60 increment cores a day has an unfortunate side effect of depleting arm
strength :(

Cheers

Julian Dunster

Re: Resistograph v Shigometer

A bit of good and bad in both? Arb Journal etc...
Which aid/tool would you go with? Are there better
machines? and do we all envisage the obvious
culmination of the two or more... maybe for more
precise readings? How many UKTC subscribers actually
use this equipment on a daily basis or are these
machines reserved only for extreme cases of
arboricultural self-doubt/litigation cases or for the
simple padding out of one's report?

To everyone on the planet (without bias; Ian) - A very
Merry Christmas - Enjoy a prosperous and Mega
Millennium! Rock & Roll with CPD for 2000 and
beyond!!!!
