It looks like Ganoderma applanatum or G. adspersum. To distinguish between
the two would necessitate cutting open the fruiting body to examine the
flesh and pore tubes. When you're not confident of the specific epithet,
but are confident of the genus, then the correct protocol is to refer to it
as a Ganoderma spp. Or sp. depending on whether it's plural or not.
I'd agree that it's not the ideal shot to have underneath the statement
'...trees and buildings can co-exist successfully...' Nonetheless, the
fruiting bodies only indicate the presence of decay. They tell you very
little about the significance of this decay; whether the structural
integrity of the tree has been compromised. To put a different spin on it
- Trees and fungi can and do coexist successfully.
Did you also note that there is no mention of the AMIUG?
It also advises that it may be possible to abate tree induced subsidence by
pruning. And gives an example that a 40 year old tree can be reduced to
the size that it was at 30 years??#!@!!!#
Seasons greetings to everyone,
Acer ventura

Re: The Gardening Which? publication 'Trees &
Subsidence - The Facts.' Apart from risk assessment
and in particular the SRA methodology being hammered
yet again especially by a leading UK consumer
organisation (yawnnnnn!!! so come on, please tell me,
when are the SRA sheep going to ask for their wool
back?), how many others have noted the base of the
Beech on page 12, with the quote just above stating
"that trees and buildings can co-exist successfully."
Oh! to see simple fragments of splintered G. adspersum
(no doubt David will tell me if I've got it wrong...)
along with the inevitable timber products all over the
lawn, the roof, the garage, the kids etc...
