My understanding and experience of G. applanatum in the UK is that it is
very common, both on living and dead trees; though not as common as G.
adspersum. I am unaware of any research that indicates that G. applanatum
is rare and has a preference for dead trees in the UK. Could you please
reference your source here? I would like to read up on it.
Even if it were rare on a living trees, I would suggest that this is
insufficient weight of evidence to 'name that fungus' with the confidence
that warrants guessing the specific epithet. Should it ever go to
litigation then you may look a bit of an arse should, upon further
investigation, the fungus be positively identified as the supposedly rare
G. applanatum. That, at present, there is no significant difference
between the type of decay the two species of fungus cause, would be
irrelevant. Such a revelation may leave your credibility as an
arboriculturist unnecessarily open to question.
Cheers

The reason I quoted Ganoderma adspersum (I understand
your thoughts here) was that Ganoderma applanatum is
rare and very often found on dead standing trees
(though this may be the case here) and that many
mistake Ganoderma applanatum for Ganoderma adspersum.
If the Beech is alive, I'd plump for the latter.
Regarding no mention of AMIUG with regards to
pre-purchase, unfortunately we cannot comment on such
articles unless we are asked to do so or at least made
aware of their impending publication. As for the
pruning to abate soils subsidence issue, again it's
down to those who were deemed qualified to quote for
the article, though had it been down to others, a very
different story would have evolved.....
A letter is being prepared to the Editor of Gardening
Which? pointing out the errors.
