UK Tree Care - http://www.oak-wood.co.uk/uktc/
One of the forthcoming UK SORP workshops 2000 includes
?Hard Surfaces around Trees.?
Pretty heavy going for this time of year, but what are
the available products (excluding APN1 for the moment,
or can we exclude it forever?) and what experience of
products and product installation do you have or have
you experienced as successful (in the short term
anyhow)? The US have a number of good ideas (Matheny &
Clark for example). The design and successful
implementation of car-park spaces or general
driveway/pathway/highway construction in proximity to
the tree rooting matrix are often the biggest problems
faced by Consulting Arboriculturists. If working in
Australia or New Zealand, what specifications are
available (Mark ???) - compaction and/or alteration of
soil levels and root severance are global problems! Of
course Arborists are not engineers, but development
clients will often require the Arborist to quantify
associated problems and make adequate specifications
such as hard surface installation in order to appease
the Local Planning Authority / Municipal Authority,
County Authority and/or City Government Dept.
These questions have been raised before, though we
have yet to create a true standard (or a standard
which appears to work) for acceptable hard surface
installation into new development close to
trees/vegetation.
Are the forthcoming SORP data so radical above
everything we have already experienced?

broken pole that held it up!"
