Yes the drum is monotonous. So is the problem.
I hate to admit it but I agree with Paul H on this.
Hazell has done nothing but promote a process
that will, if unchecked by monotonous drum beating, bring our
industry into disrepute with its Client
Base.
The SRA is fatally flawed in almost every aspect. Even
its originator, Dr Biddle has gone on public
record stating that it can't and doesn't work. Has
nobody grasped that yet? The guy who devised it
says it doesn't work. Says a lot for Biddle does it
not?
Let me give you one example, which for me is most
significant. The SRA asks arbosists to make
assumptions where there are no data, i.e. if you do not know
foundation depths, assume 1.0 metres.
OK. When I was a raw young student of Science, many many
moons ago, I took Physics. One experiment
we had to do was called 'The Experiment on Errors'. The
concept was simple, one did a simple three or four
stage experiment to measure a known quantity, i.e. the force
of gravity or the frequency of the A/C supply.
Right, we did it and got the right answer. Then we
repeated the experiment with one simple difference. In the
first stage we introduced a very minor, but deliberate
error. Then found out how one simple, small and one thought
barely significant, error, compounded through the stages to
produce an answer that gave the force of gravity as
32 feet/second/second plus or minus 64
feet/second/second!!
One tiny error compounded through the experiment to produce a
result plus or minus 200%!!!!
SRA makes a number of assumptions, at least four to my
knowledge - So, do you want to guess at the
magnitude of the potential error factor?? Of course you
could be luckey and hit the nail square on the head.
But how many times out of 100 would that be the case??
Is that any way to produce an 'Arboricultural Risk
Assessment' ? which is what we are doing!
Just think about it - It is sad, but there is a great
lack of basic science in our industry and, rightly or wrongly,
we need that grounding. If only to be able to see that
Giles Biddle is a lousey scientist. I know, I've been there.
I've worshipped at the same alter, I've done the research,
written the papers, been peer reviewed in prestigious
journals. Giles trades on the fact that he thinks, that
we, (the industry), think he is brilliant. He's not, he is
a poor scientist. And, before you say it, I have the
proof and can produce it. Check it out yourself, read page
333 of his Magnum Opus and then decide.
As for Hazell - this is the guy back in 1984/85 said,
'Arboriculture? what the hell is that?, its got no future
just a bunch of Tree Surgeons playing at being
foresters" This is the guy 'Who has pulled the industry
together?
Spare me the BullS**t.
You may be bored with it. You may not want to address
the problem. But, if you don't get out of that comfort
zone you are in - make sure your insurance premiums are up to
date. You're gonna need it.
Happy Holidays
