I saw a large proportion of the programme before the gremlins in my VCR had
there revenge and so I missed the actual uprooting of the tree. Did they have
no better idea's than using a tractor or hadn't they thought far enough ahead
to realise the best chance of extracting the root was to use the crown as a
counter balance? Perhaps we should send these postings to time team for
comment?
Personally I don't see any problem with felling Oaks to solve a riddle,
but it seems to me from what you have said they short cut the thought process.
