It was interesting that the challenge that almost stopped the excavation was
not the druids, but the possible intervention by the Health and Safety
Executive. I would like to know what HSE would have made of felling the oak
with axes, particularly when the head of one started to come off. I also
found it hard to believe that bronze age people lacked the wit to work out
that its easier to uproot a whole tree than to dig out the stump. Just
shows the difference between knowledge and understanding.
Most of the contentious cases I've seen got that way because local people
felt that they hadn't been consulted or that their views were ignored, this
was obviously another one.
The bristle cone pine programme was interesting, according to Alan
Mitchell's 1972 book on conifers P.aristata is from Colorado, Arizona and
New Mexico and P.longaeva is from California, Nevada and Utah, which
includes the really old ones.
There was also a quite good BBC programme a couple of days earlier that
followed an oak through a 1,000 year life.

Re:Time Team Programme
I found the whole process totally farcical. Did they really need to remove
the timbers? After all, what did it prove?
I feel that the programme actually portrayed the "Forest Druids" as being
more professional than the so called archaeologists. I never thought I
would
find myself siding with "Forest Druids" but in this case I do and so do
most
of the local people of Holme in Norfolk.
The whole event was, however, an excellent lesson in how NOT to conduct
proceedings on sensitive sites (Note the lack of consultation).
Yours angrily
Oli Macfarlane
