I,m sorry to say folks that this entire discussion is exactly the same as the
one in last years AA news letters about the report writhing work shop!
is it a case of the names having been changed to protect the innocent? but
the story remains the same. vis.
A does loads of work or finds out vital info, uses it for a little while then
b and c get to hear about it, so a sells it to them to help the industry, and
make some money, but if a is shrewd enough he uses the money to find out more
info and then pass it on to b,c,d and e to make more money.
lets face it all of us do some things for nothing, but we all need to live,
and there will always be the proverbial Good and Bad guys.
the question is which do you want to be? you can be both though!!!

Hello Dorothy
Thanks for the input but I fear you have misread what I said.
I am not trying to keep information to myself or within my organisation nor
to
produce a monopoly. There is a balance here - if one invests in development
one should expect to recover investment if the development proves
useful/saleable.
Infromation has and will continue to be desiminated as we have always done
through publications, talks at Conferences, SORP Workshops etc. As I stated
to
Colin Bashford, most of our development data is in the public domain through
one
forum or another.
The key point I was trying to make is that whatever is developed by any
party, those
of us in the private sector are in competition at some stage or another.
Whatever we like
to think we are in business and business runs by tried and tested methods.
The point is
that just because we work with trees, that's no reason to abandon business
practices. I agree we
are all colleagues and like other professions we share data collectively.
We have always done
so to the extent of having ideas and products 'scorned' and 'blacked' by
some, but persisted
and won through because what we were doing was to serve the client base.
That said
in the business climate, it is inevitable that some developments will be
better or more applicable
than others and these will produce a good financial reward. It is sound
business sense to
protect these for a period of consolidation.
An example of this was the almost legedary secret of the 'Recipe for Coca
Cola'
I heard an interview with the CEO of Coca Coa Inc in which he said to the
interviewer,
"I can give you that recipe now if you want it - then what are you going to
do with it?"
The point being Coke is more than a recipe is a brand, and an ethos and all
that.
But we still see Pepsi, Virgin Cola, and all the Store Brand Colas selling
well and to
my taste really no different to Coke. The market was created by Coke and
other followed
with Pepsi now being neck and neck with Coke in world sales.
So, my original point still stands - "Just because we work with trees is no
reason
to abandon sound business principles" The knowledge is there, it is shared
and we all move on.
I am not so ambitious as to thoink that I want to corner the market - that
would
be stupid and would blind one to new developments and forward progress
leading
to loss in the long term.

Hello Dealga,
So lets keep trees out of the discussion for a minute and look at
business only. In business information is power, power is money. By
saying that you are not willing to share information you are in reality
saying that you are endeavouring to keep all the power and money to
yourself. In time this method would prove finite because one person or
company is not capable of producing all the information. I prefer to look
at the long term and share my information thus enabling an infinite
exchange of power and money. More info, more power, more money for me!
Happy New Year:)
Dorothy
