Curiously enough, I had reason to explore this just before Christmas. It
would appear that presently, DNA testing for roots is not available in the
UK. It could be, but requires further funding (approximate cost projected
at ?100 - ?150/sample). If anyone is really into it and wants to fund the
necessary research with ?10,000 then contact Ian Richardson at Reading
University. Apparently, Bangor University is involved some research into
this area, but I didn't pursue it because the use of DNA identification
would be of very limited value in an insurance case.

DNA identification would of course be very accurate. However, it would
also be very expensive because each root sample would have to be tested.
The current identification system allows tree roots to be categorised as
'similar under low magnification'. Not the case with DNA testing. So,
for
example, if you had 10 root samples of Oak in your trial pit and say three
Oak trees that you suspect, how many roots would it be necessary to
identify? Notwithstanding the intrinsic limitations to root
identification
and how valuable such information maybe in an insurance claim.

Can anyone give me a brief appraisal on what DNA sampling services are
available for identifying tree's in insurance related cases? And how
accurate
are they to species or to forms?

thanks

Ashley
