UK Tree Care - http://www.oak-wood.co.uk/uktc/
The comments certainly would apply to a number of trees in cities, and
indeed there are probably lots that are still standing simply because
somebody with the relevant authority cannot see beyond felling a tree,
simply because it's large. You have to have a vision beyond your own life
span. Getting rid of large trees that are in poor condition and replacing,
is a way forward for future generations.
However sweeping statements are easy to make, and maybe they provoke lots of
discussion. The reality is that there are plenty of trees in cities that
shouldn't be cut down. I doubt whether a lot of newly planted trees in
cities would survive to an old age. I believe it is harder to get trees
established in an urban environment even with the better knowledge we have
in tree care. The urban environment is becoming increasingly hostile to
trees as we all know.
There is also the politics. In my backyard we have loads of poxy lime trees
along streets that are pollarded every 2 years. We'd love to get rid of
them and replace. When we tried a few years ago we had the old chaining to
the tree scenario so the scheme was ditched as our elected reps are afraid
of losing votes.
One final comment, will ML's comment go down in history as a gaff on a parr
with page 333 of Biddle's book? (ouch!)
