For Kev at Thurrock
The ISA UK/I Chapter is constituted as members and Professional Affiliations
(PA) in the same way as ISA International.
ISA International has 5 Pas
ISA International UKI
Equivalent
UAA Utility Arborist Association BUAA
SCA Society of Commercial Arborists
Commercial Group
SMA Society of Municipal Arborists None
at present but hopes for NATO
long term
SSA Student Society of Arborists UK SSA
AREA Arboricultural Research & Education Academy ALTRAF
Each PA is an independently constituted body and has representation on the
International Board (UKI Board)
which are the Directors that run either ISA or UKI. In addition each Board
has an Executive comprised of the
elected officers and in the case of ISA the Executive Director who is a paid
officer. Some Chapters have and ED
as well, i.e. Southern, Western, Kentucky etc. Each PA is constituted in
the same way, i.e. Directors and an Executive.
The UKI board also has three Directors who are elected directly by the
members. Each Director has a 3-year term
of office, which is renewable. The ISA Board has one director from each
Chapter in addition to one from each PA,
who is elected/nominated by the Chapter and / or PA. With 37 Chapters and 5
PA's the ISA Board is at 41 plus the
Executive, which makes 46. (The UKI Chapter has 15 Directors)
It is important to note that the Board of Directors, i.e. the Chapters, runs
the ISA, not the other way around.
Chapters are constituted independently of ISA and are not controlled by it,
all their activities and finances are
managed independently of the ISA. The same goes for the PA's
The purpose of the PA's is to represent a specified Sector Interest to the
Board, which is the umbrella
organisation for Arboriculture, much like the Institute of Biology is
comprised of 78 Independent groupings
representing special interest or sector areas of Biology, i.e. Botanists,
Entomologists, Plant Pathologists,
Mycologists, ecologists etc.
All the UKI Chapter has done is to mirror that set up.
ISA does not have a Consulting Group as a PA. This is represented by ASCA,
the American Society of Consulting Arborists,
which is not a PA of ISA., nor can it be as it is representative of the top
flight of professionals.
If CAS succeeds and as we move toward Chartered Status, that would fall
within its remit and it would then have to
separate from ISA as it would fall within the remit of ICF. However, it
could function as a PA if it represented aspiring Charterists.
Any regulation of Consultancy and Consulting business would naturally fall
within the remit of ICF as the Recognised
Chartered Institute in both UK and EU Law. Like it or not, that's where we
are heading but ICF is changing and strong links
Have been forged between it and the UKI Chapter.
I hope all this helps, but if you or anyone else needs more information,
please contact me direct.
