Thanks to both Ken and Clive for info on burning chip as fuel. I'm not certain that this is an environmentally acceptable option unless we can show that we are maintaining or increasing the tree populations from which the material is taken but it seem a very attractive option from the point of view of disposal of arisings. I believe that a pilot electricity generating project is to be started in West London - or so I heard at the AA conference in Exeter. It was also there that one speaker stated that exemption from licensing for storage of green waste required an application and was not automatic below a certain tonnage. For the first time, this year we have taken chip from local contractors as we no longer produce sufficient quantities in-house to mulch our newly planted and young trees - 1000 x 2m mulch rings uses a lot of wood chip! In relation to woodchip burners there is a company based in Sussex called 'Nordist' who produce such beasts, specialising in units to heat small businesses, farms and schools etc. It's run by a bloke called Tony Redman (01825 XXXXXX) who is both knowledgeable and approachable should anyone be interested. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A couple of things: Incorporate woodchip mulch into your planting schemes - if you do any - or better still persuade your local authority to do it.
