Does anyone know if more recent research has overturned this finding or has
my report been written by Dr X Ray Vision?

Mmm, you're not the first person in your part of the world to refer to
one of the local consultants as having X Ray vision. I wonder if it's
the same person :)

I think you're on the right track in digging out published research, as
opposed to the "in my opinion...", which, IMO, is a phrase that doesn't
belong in a professional report.

It's pretty well established that roots do all sorts of weird and
unpredictable things - pass through small holes and then expand on the
other side, suddenly change direction on hitting a soil interface. The
bottom line is neither you nor the report writer has much idea what
happens to these roots. You can demonstrate that there is no evidence to
suggest he's right, but you can't actually prove him wrong.
