Scott,
As I understand it our Victorian ancestors imported the Grey squirrels from North America. They turned out to be more successful in exploiting the varied habitats in the UK and squeezed out the native populations of (smaller) Reds. I don't think they have Greys in mainland Europe, but when I was last in Poland not only did they have native Reds, but also Blacks (a slight variation on a theme i think), and in one private estate they even had Whites!!! Perhaps the Blacks were imported to the US by Polacks, ask Bob if his parents had any pets!!!
