Mind you I've sat in March, in the snow outside french alpine cabins being
burned by the sun and you can actually smell the firewood baking. So perhaps
its the quality of drying that really counts.
Open fires? Most of the heat goes up the chimney. Get a stove if you want to
be warm!

Ahh, the crisp smell of the Alps, stop it, you've reminded me that its 3
months before I'm there again and I can't wait. I stop over with a group of
freeriders in one such log cabin on the tree line, owned by an aging French
Swiss builder who made his fortune as a hairdresser and who still seduces
women mercilessly!! We cook on a wood fueled range that also heats the cabin
which is efficiently insulated. The solar panels provide battery power for
lighting. No mod cons, no running water (snow melted) on the range, dump in a
bucket, pee outside.....at night a pee can last half an hour while I count
shooting stars and satellites in absolute awe intoxicated by the occasional
twang of the lazily drifting wood smoke until the onset of frost bite, brings
me round again. We eat, get drunk and sleep like babies on the mezzanine and
dream of fresh
powder in the morning, which in frenetic ecstasy we trash before the townies
can get to it.
Now that' what I call living.
