We use the BRE Availability of Sunshime protractor which is simple to use
and very helpful when trying to exactly determine the available sunlight
hours for a particular part of a site. We have also devised a useful
calculator in Excel which allows you to show the actual available sunshine
in graph form (useful for appeals). If you want more details, give me a call
on 01202 261333
Another line of argument I have found to be helpful can be found in BS 5837
paragraph 6.3 Proximity to structures. This can help in the early stages of
your quest to get the developers to move the building away.
Good luck
Mark

Subject: Trees and Shading
I've been asked to write a proof of evidence for a planning inquiry in the
next few days - as if I didn't have enough to do already!...
The main problem is the developer wants to build a 3 - 4 storey block of
flats about 5m from a line of mature, TPO'd yew and other trees.... Even
their own plans show the crowns against the windows of the flank walls!
If the new residents are into light deprevation, all well and good but
otherwise I envisage a few conflicts arising if the flats get built.
I'm aware of APN 5 "Shaded by Trees" and the latest version of "Hedge
Height and Light Loss" on the DTLR web-site, but can anyone point me
towards:
- Any other methods for calculating / displaying the effects of tree
shading on buildings,
- Any useful references / precedents?
Thanks in advance,
Jon Lambourne
